One of my goals is to perform in a prestigious theatre production here in Bangalore, India.

I was to meet the director of the play on a Friday at 6 pm. I waited for an hour. No response to my calls or messages. He stood me up. I was meters away from one of my most awaited goals, but a matter of seconds changed it all.

I deduced that this wasn’t for me. Nuh-uh. Not this time. It wasn’t meant to be, and as the saying goes, “Everything happens for a reason”.

Maybe I was as quick as lightning in deciding that and didn’t give it much thought. So here I am, learning to take small steps to reach my goals.

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible,” — Tony Robbins

Little things do matter

  1. Becoming an avid reader — A few years ago, reading wasn’t my forte at all, and I found it somewhat boring (I can see book lovers rolling their eyes at me right now). A turn of events led me into taking literature in my Bachelor’s. Naturally, reading books became a part of my coursework. Believe me, I would’ve never imagined myself finishing a 700-page book. I was someone who looked at the number of pages and read books. So, I started off doing exactly that. I began with thin books and eventually have been moving on to thicker ones. My latest was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. There are so many more on my list and I can’t wait to read them!
  2. Organizing and other notes — I jot down my thoughts, my priorities, books I have to read, and everything in between on Notion.so (https://www.notion.so/personal) which helps me remember and keep everything organized. Try it out. You’ll love it! You can start your journal here, make to-do lists, and a lot more.

3. Subscribing to a newsletter — I await every Thursday for this one! Why? As the quotes and ideas that I read and gather from here are one of a kind. Taken from a plethora of sources and authors, it poses multiple perspectives and gives me the mental space to understand at my pace. The best part is that I can go back to it whenever I want. So, I note down a few quotes from every newsletter that I read and I go about them later on, to stay positive and motivate myself. There’s also a question included in the end for one to ponder about and introspect.

Here’s the link to the newsletter. Subscribe, enjoy reading, and share.

4. Being consistent — One of the biggest breaks in life (the never-ending lockdown) led me into picking up the guitar. I reckoned that, to at least be good at playing an instrument, I have to be consistent. So I try practicing daily for at least half an hour (although it extends most of the days and I don’t realize how long I’ve been playing for).

I’ve tried to incorporate the last goal into most of the things that I do. Be it exercising, reading books, or writing on Medium (I’m trying to be consistent at this one).

“All great achievements require time,” — Maya Angelou

I hope these can help you grow, believe, stay positive, and be motivated to reach your goals too.

If you have steps or ways you take to reach your goals, mention them in the comments below. Would love to connect and learn!

Cheers!
